Thanks Jonathan - I had the same problem and after reading your storey, I decided to try and dismantle our dryer. I took one of the covers off and water came rushing out (from a place that no water should be). I guess it must have got in there when we were lugging it around when we moved house. With no water in the electrics, it now works fine :-).

We had a similar problem with our Creda condenser drier. With the power off I took the cover off the rear assembly and found the wire from an underwired bra stuck between the heater elements. Carefully removing the offending bra wire, taking care not to damage the heater elements, resolved the problem.
Its not a complicated process but if you are in any doubt don't take risks, call in a professional.
