Mend Ariston Margherita 2000 Round Machine

Why does the dial keep going round on my Ariston Margherita 2000?

HI, when I go to set the machine the dial just keeps spinning and the wash cycle doesn't start, can anyone explain why this is happening and how I can fix it, thank you
