Mend Volkswagen Sharan Vw Start Engine

my v.w sharan automatic 2.0 7 seater wont go into gear?

i am able to start the engine while auto gear stick in park position but unable to depress button on side of gear stick to engage drive.
when engine not going am able to depress button and move gear stick

Volkswagen Volkswagen Sharan Vehicles, Cars Vw Start Engine

There is a microswitch on the brake pedal,so that when the pedal is pushed it allows the button to pressed to move the gear lever.
Very common fault.
