xsara noise from front?

I keep hearing a noise from the front left hand side of my car ,not all the time ,no worse on rough ground no noise when stationary ,or when wheels are turned,sounds a bit metallic,very intermittent,it sounds like when the old water pumps were on the way out and the spinning piece used to catch on the housing ,I havent a clue please help
