Why the freezer is not making ice?

i had a similar problem a few weeks ago had the engineer out was told there was ice frozen around the temp sensor. was told it was due to the fact the freezer or fridge door is left open to longer or used to often. was told to turn it off for 24 hours then turn back on and it will reset and work fine. cant just press the reset button. yet i have not done this due to the fact where do i put all the goods inside so some time in the future for me.
