How to unstick a stuck control key (eject/play/pause etc.)?

I have two boombox audiocassette players. Each has the same problem: a control key (the Play button) is stuck in the down position ... will not pop up.

Problem persists, even when I press one or more of the other control buttons.

I have tried (boombox unplugged) inserting a steel nail file all around the stuck control button ... but jiggling it does not loosen the stuck Play button.

How to unstick the Play button?

Play buttons are usually arranged to stay in the down position until the tape reaches the end or you press them - the locking mechanism is released. Your locking mechanism is probably clogged up with the dust of ages.

Either take the case apart and attempt to clean it up or give it a SMALL squirt of WD40 oil and be patient for a day or two - do not be tempted to keep squirting oil into the box else you'll cause bigger problems.
