astra starts up and stops after a few seconds could my key fob cause this?

When you turn on the ignition does the engine management light flash. If it does then it is an immobiliser fault. Take the two parts of the key fob apart slowly and look inside the part with the key in it for a micro chip (normally black in colour about 10mm x 5mm x 2mm if it is not there then that is you problem. If it is you need to get an automotive key maker to check that the micro chip is working right or try the spare key if you have one.
