how do you adjust the torsion bar on a ford courier (1.8td 50)52 plate?

i recently had a new rear axle fitted as it failed its mot on the rear bushes and a mate who is a mechanic got a nearly new axle from a scrapyard for £90,once fitted it passed but now its sitting really low even when empty?i,ve just had brand new shockers fitted as well but it made no difference whatsoever.as when i asked my freind about adjusting the torsion bar he said you cant and i had to show him where a garage had told me you do it from. im assuming he didnt even look at this when fitting the axle.so im hoping this is all it is and wondered if anyone can shed a little light on the matter for me,as i dont think my mate knows too much about this sort of thing and is costing me a fortune

the bar comes outwards,by using threaded hole in same you should be able to use a slide hammer to remove it,you will soon know if siezed, because it wont come out!! its not just a case of turning bar,you need to alter position of trailing arm in relation to bar [by jacking up body so that it allows bar to be fitted a further spline on,there by giving more clearance between wheel and body.]

cheers k,i think ive got that anyways,so i take the torsion bar out,by what?braying it?which way out through the hole in the sill?then i turn it and put the torsion bar back in to take the pressure yeah? if it is siezed how will i tell? and will getting a new axle solve the problem or is it a case of get rid do you think?

if you look on outer end of torsion bar [just in front of wheel through hole in sill] you will find that it is threaded so that torsion bar can be pulled out, this of course if torsion bar is not seized ,which they will be!.....but if not jack up body so that there is no weight on axle, wheels will be just touching floor,-may need one end of shocker disconnecting,[mark both ends of bar for reference]-then using slide hammer remove torsion bar, jack up bodyso that next spline can be used and refit bar ,repeat for other side[you may need to do this a few times to get correct ride height,[ make sure that inner bar reference marks are aligned each time bar is refitted and only outer marks are moving round] good luck...you will need it!
