Gurgling in wc bowl?

Every now and then (perhaps once or twice a week) the water in the wc bowl gurgles and throws up some bubbles. This normally happens after a recent flush. The wc is on the first floor. Although not life threatening it does cause me some (possibly needless) worry in case it is the commencement of some bigger problem looming !
