Mend Singer 518 Breaks Breaking Three

thread breaks and binds?

I have a singer stylist 518. The upper thread started breaking after two or three stitches. The upper thread binds around the bobin case in a big tangled mess. How can I remedy this?

ensure top and bottom tension is set correctly and also see if take up spring behind top tension unit is working properly.not so easy to give solution without seeing problem oneself
