Will using gaffer tape seal a leaking water pipe?

Have just bought a roll of heavy strength gaffer tape. Can I use this to seal a metal dripping pipe?

Thanks!

As usual from somebody who doesn't know, you don't put ptfe tape on compression joint threads it needs to be on the olive especially the bit facing the union

Thanks very much for this helpful reply, Roger. I've decided to go with an insurance claim which will no doubt increase the premium but......!!

The simple answer is no; gaffa tape will not solve your problem no matter what its strength. There is no simple answer and it will depend on whether the leak is in a supply line or a low pressure system as to what is needed to stop the leak. If possible, the pipework either side of the leak needs to be isolated, that part then drained and a proper repair carried out. If its a compression joint at fault, dismantle the joint and wrap sufficient PTFE tape around the thread, in the direction the nut rotates when tightening it. If its in a length of pipe, after isolating and draining it, you can use an inline union, either compression or soldered.

You do not need to be abusive in your reply! Waste of time and space!

highly unlikely,it may appear to work until the tape gets saturated.

fix the leak in the appropriate manner before it gets any worse,

honestly I cannot believe you are asking a question like this,

surely your own common sense should tell you that it won't work and it isn't a quick fix.
