stripe down left side of screen?

there is an intermitent fault on my screen. From the start of The left hand side, about 2-3 inch wide, a stripe from top to bottom (alot like a margine on a piece of writing paper), will flicker on and off. sometimes it will stay on and sometimes will stay off. fiddling with the casing on the tv down the side in question, and basically applying pressure to that area of the casing on the tv directly effects this stripe. you can get it to come on and off by fiddling lol. and change colours with parralell lines both running verticle and horizontal. im sure this could be something simple but im not the expert here, hence im asking u guys! :)
