why is the volume intermittant on my 07 mondeos 6000cd stereo?

Having changed the battery on my mondeo and re-entered the correct security code.
The stereo works correctly but the volume is barely audible even when turned to max but when i slam the car door it seems to work fine.
sadly this only solves the problem intermittantly-help.
