Mend Kirby Classic 3 - 2CB Belt Replaced Brush Roller

how can i make the belt stay on my kirby classic 3 -2cb?

I replaced the brush roller and belt. when I placed the belt on the belt lifter and try to turn it, the lifter pops out of the hole. I put the belt on by stretching it over the shaft and the belt keeps coming off the very minute the brush roller turns backward. what holds the belt on???
