no power getting to the control panel - i have tried all obvious things - is there a cut out switch on machine?

Have you tried something else in socket?
If that works,
Have you checked fuse?
Power into m/c goes via a noise suppesion cct usualy at rear of m/c, you would need to check in/out of that. before anything else.
