starter moter or battery ????

when i try to start my laguna it sounds like to starter motor is hesatating before it kicks into life, only for half a second or so. some times wont turn at all but give battery a boost and then it works but still hesatates. I think starter is fu-fued but need advice before the hassle of changing it or getting new batt.
