Sharp ER 1970. Letter P on display and will not connect?

Our cash register was switched off for a couple of weeks, worked fine when switched back on, but now has a letter P on the display and when we key in the amount of cash wecannot connect it to a department

It sounds like you are in the middle of programming. Turn the key to program mode, press clear (CL) then TL (CASH)
