belt slips kenwood kcd1w?

i have fitted a new belt to a kenwood kcd1w tumble dryer after the last one snapped. now the belt slips on the motor shaft and the drum slows down almost to a stop , i have checked the drum moves freely with the belt disconnected , what could be the fault?
