How to repiar an oster kitchen center?

I have an oster kitchen center base unit model 980 that only works on high. The turn dial speed won't slow down or speed up the motor-The dial rotates perfectly and the red bar moves for slow to fast but the motor only stays on 1 speed. can this be repaired myself- I am kinda handy guy.
