how to put a cambelt on zafira 2001 engine?

i bought new cambelt to go to zafira z18xe engine, 1.8ls, 16v. Its the correct belt but it will not go on. it appears to be 1.5" short. I've checked the teeth are correct and its the same size as the old one.

If the new belt is the same length as the old one, how can it be 1½ inches too short? Have you routed the belt correctly? Next time you take something apart take a photo or draw a diagram of how it fits, then you won't have these problems, doh
