Agrotrac T1100 Lawnmower Tractor Gearbox?

I have an Agrotrac T1100 with a Tecumseh Peerless 6 + 1 speed Transmission which does not have a part number on the outside. The driveshaft only intermittently gives drive to the wheels and I want to repair it.
Does anyone have any idea:
a) what the problem could be?
b) How do I dismantle the transmission? I have it out of the tractor.

The stripdown manual for all Peerless transmissions is available to buy - from Amazon, ebay, and a number of other sellers. Availability of parts will be the problem, and you won't know what parts you need until you have it in bits.
