fault in steering lock?

my daughter has 2005 Renault megane sports tourer.
when she put the card in to start the car ,a notice came up saying steering locked ,when it was not ,there were no lights coming up on the dash,although the car lights and the horn were both working.she tried disconnection the battery and reconnection again, but the same message came up .anyone any ideas .thanks James
