Mend Mountfield HP470 Cord Machine Pull

How can I retrieve the starter cord on a Mountfield HP470?

The starter cord on my HP470 flipped out of the bracket and retracted into the machine. I can pull it out about 6 inches but no further - can you tell me what I need to do to pull it out completely so that I can rehook it onto the bracket on the handle?
