The plug and socket are flat and have three pins, earth being on a brass tab similar to continental mains plugs. The two reds are on the centre pin.
I had wired it as you described. However, I think someone has changed the configuration inside the motor terminal so how should this be? As is .... There are two reds and two discoloured whites and a single black which appears to be an earth as it was connected to the motor chassis. One red and one white are joined and are on the outside pin, one white is on the centre pin and the single red is on the other outside pin.
The operation as is that the motor will run as soon as power is on and operation of the footpedal has the reverse effect of slowing and then stopping the motor when it is depressed. In addition power will only come on if the lamp is switched on which is suggesting to me that either the switch is an isolator for both lamp and motor or, the motor is in series with it. Curious.... Hope you can shed some light on it.
