Hi Ross.
If you want to try and fix this yourself you would probably be better getting a Haynes manual for it off the internet.
It will will explain how to test a lot of the systems and has a good fault finding section. It would be money well spent and if you are keeping the car for a while you'll be able to do all sorts of jobs yourself.
Book 0686 covers Petrol Escort from Sept 80-Sept 90.
Not 100% sure it will cover Turbo Models but will still be useful.

hi yes ive tryed all that last nyt bt everyfinks fine bt its stil got the folt .lastnyt i double checked the coil took wires off n rechased them n made sure thay was on the ryt 1s after doin all that i started the car up n it ran fine n reved ryt up so i 4t it was fixed turned it off n left it 5mins started up again and the folt was back so im nt 2 sure nw fank4 the info dave was a help as i dont have a clue bt sadly none of them r makein the folt n r workin fine:s

HI.
Backfire could be caused by incorrect ignition timing

Start with some of the basics first

Fuel in tank.
Is coil giving out good spark when cranking.
Are you getting a good spark at all plugs.
Can you hear fuel pump running for a few seconds when ignition turned on.
All pipes and wires connected around engine.
Check inside both ends of plug leads for corrosion.
Check inside and outside of distributor cap and rotor arm.
Has distributor come loose and moved position.
Has timing belt jumped a tooth. Will throw out ignition/camshaft timing but may still start up.
