Mend Handset Phone Batteries

how can i fix my handset its disconnected from the base?

the phone looks like its charging the batteries up and has been like this for days when you take the phone off the base the charger symbol disappears and the handset is dead when i place it back it charges up again but i cannot get the phone to connect with the base.
