My 3rd generation ipod touch is dead ? someone please help me?

i did the update for my ipod touch 3rd generation from the officical apple website and now my ipod is completely dead
when i plug it into my laptop it can regestier a device but it says unknown
its completely DEAD
should i just take it to apple store in melbourne or can someone help me fix it
