2003 nissan navara 2.5 turbo diesel tick over to fast ?

Been running fine since we disconnected the neutral position switch on the gearbox which was causing the engine to hold back. Been ok for 4 weeks then today still drives fine but the tickover won't go below 1600 revs - any ideas? is it related to that switch being disconnected?
