I have a problem with my above boiler. hot water only works if i turn the heating off. i cant run the heating & hot water at the same time any ideas

I'm assuming by the age of the boiler, it's a gravity system.
You probably have 'robbing' going on, try turning your CH pump to a lower setting to stop the CH robbing from the HW.
If it's a pumped system, ask again.
