smoke !?

Hi I have an Indesit diswasher all the electrical controls are at the top of the door, there is a gap on the inside at the top where a metal U shaped which is position at the top of the main of dishwasher so that when you close the door the metal U shape fits into the gap at the top of the door which I assume makes contact to say the door is closed and the dishwsher starts. It made a strange noise and smoke has come out of that gap and ideas what part has burnt out ?
