Vauxhall Agila 's out side temp indercator broken does it matter?

it was reading 65.3 c earlier then went off and just showed 'f' then when my husband took the car out and there was a small amount of steam/smoke that came from the engine . know change in performance and everything else is running fine could it be serious?
