Mend Whirlpool AWZ650 Stopped Heating Thermostat Element

Whirlpool AWZ650 stopped heating?

Hi,

My Whirlpool AWZ650 has stopped heating. A few have responded to other similar questions that the thermostat needs replacing. How can I be sure that it's the thermo rather than the heating element?
Also - are there any schematics of this model available on the web anywhere?
Cheers,

Warren

I have the same problem with my Whirlpool AWZ650 and upon inspection one of the thermostats has failed and the heater element is also damaged. I can buy both a replacement heater and thermostats, but unfortunately the wires and plugs have melted that attach to them. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement wires?

Mine also stopped heating. So first,I removed the plug from the mains and after removing the top -two screws , then slide it back and up -I removed the back. Easily seen were the two thermostats and heater in the centre back. It was immediately obvious - the connections to the top thermostat were charred and the thermostat had fallen apart ! I did disconnect the connectors to the heater and used an Ohm meter to check it was OK - reading of 30 Ohms cold.
I've ordered the thermostat kit and hope to fit it as soon as it arrives. ( About £15.00 off Ebay !)
I do not understand the comment about removing the drum to change the heater - just the rear access panel ! 15 minute job ?!!

to check the TOCs u will need a multimetre all you need to do is make sure the power is OFF and the plug out and take each of the probes to the meter and touch each terminal of the toc make sure that wires are pulled off each side as u may pick areading up from somewere else. on your meter you are looking for a reading to show that there is an open circuit if there is no reading then the stat is down.you can repeat this method on your element and the same will apply.if you get readings on the stats and on the element there is definatley a wiring problem.

Its me again, don't know if schematics are available online, but if they are needed you could check to see if manufacture has a web site and request one from them.
Also forgot in my last post, it is easy to tell if it is the element cuz the element will be broken in one or more places, if it is in the wires it will be harder to tell cuz u will have to look at all of them, look for melted or burnt wire casing, if its the thermostat I am unable to help cuz never delt with that problem.
Good luck, and don't let it frustrate you.

Warren,
The only way to check the heating element that I know of is to remove the drum, wich involves basically tearing down the whole machine, give yourself lots of work space and you will probably need socket wrench and phillips head screwdriver, most models of dryers have the heating element in the back of the unit. If it is the element call your local appliace repair shop and tell them the make and model of your unit and they can get you the part if they don't have it in stock. It is a lot of work, but when you concider the price of a $30 heating element over (concervitive estimate) $100 service call its's worth it to do yourself.
Hope this helps.
P.S. The replacement part will come with install instructions, follow them exactly of the dryer will overheat and cause other problems (personal experiance), don't make my mistake and take shortcuts.
