sylvania dvd recorder shuts itself off?

Sylvania zv450sl8 2007 vhs/dvd recorder shuts itself off, then comes back on and makes a grinding noise on the vhs side.I see the arm that helps the vhs in moving but nothing else. Can it be fixed or should I toss it?
