renault clio auto ?

when starting the car will sometimes rev up to 3 thou and stay there have to turn off and keep retrying will eventually drop to about 900 rpm there is free play in throttle cable,this can also occur when driving and you end doing 55-60 ish even after losing foot off the accelerator frightening for a OAP
how can i sort it or things to check
