i have a xv-501bk dvd player i just replaced the optical pickup with a new one. it only reads music. for dvds it spins about ten seconds then stops and the tray opens.I replaced the laser with another new one the i have and it does the same thing. the both lasers only read music. sounds like its trying to read a dvd movie. Do i have two adjust the laser.
Mine's not really an answer but to tell you that I have a similar problem with my Kenwood XD-DV9 combo CD/DVD player. After a while of non-usage the unit no longer plays DVDs, as soon as it picks up the DVD the tray opens. However, I have no problem with the CDs. Th last time I took the unit to a radio technician he just played a few DVDs till it started working normally, then it was fine till I stopped playing DVDs for a while. So maybe you could just keep trying different DVDs till it picks up one - it hasn't worked this time for me though. All the best. Can someone out there offer some advice?

Does it play VCD's? Have you checked the Progressive Mode is not on and in 'Auto' (manual warns that some DVD's will not play in this mode).
Is parental lock activated?
Did you replace with the correct laser?
