How can I remove carbon build up in amplifier of my music system?

My music system is manual. my music system plays fine. but during play while increasing volume level, while swithing on loudness level, etc. there is a rough noise that occurs. i had not used my music system for a long time. some technician said there may be some carbon build up.
Please guide me how to remove carbon from my amplifier, so that i can hear clean, noise free, sound.

Variable resistors (potentiometers) used to adjust volume and tone etc are prone to the build up of dirt. This can sometimes cause crackles in the sound when making adjustments.

You can buy proprietary switch cleaner aerosol sprays to clean the pots - squirt and twiddle i.e. spray in a little cleaner and turn the control backwards and forwards.
