laptop no longer burns cd's?

my dell inspiron will no longer burn cd's. it still reads cd's but when i try to burn it comes up as windows has encountered a problem with burning. will i have to replace the drive or could it be somwthing else?

Have you tried burning from a different operating system such as a Linux LiveCD, this would guage whether you have a hardware problem or a operating system problem.
