The whiskers are possibly underneath the switch rather than on the side of the switch. They look like a grey/silver litchen growth but flat. You would need to unsolder the switch from the board to see them.
I say this because I have just had to repair my fridge freezer again!! for the same fault. It is worth persevering as about 99 % of electronic faults are bad connections! (My hifi started switching itself off at random and the printed circuit board was filthy. Quick clean with Iso propyl alcohol worked wonders.)
Cleaning needs to be meticulous with careful scratching of surface with craft knife (health and safety warning here). I have also varnished legs up side of switches to try and stop it happening again. Non metallic nail varnish of unfashionable colour ideal for this. Use just enough to cover exposed leg on body of switches.

We have just had identical problem over several days with Hoover fridge freezer. Currently corrected itself - think it might be related to interference from signals either from base unit cordless digital phone needing recharging being sent to second phone near appliance, or external BT cable work nearby which is now complete. Is this a possibility?
