whats wrong with my citroen xsara?

my car will select the gears no problem when the engine is switched off, but when the engine is switched on i cannot select gears 1 & 2 also gear 4 is a problem. the clutch seems fine not slipping at all but the engine has just started to smell.

any suggestions please ?
