HOOVER TC650 HAVE TO HOLD START BUTTON IN TO WORK AND MAKES BUZZING NOISE?

I HAVE TO HOLD THE START BUTTON IN ON THE DRYER FOR IT TO WORK. WHILST ITS HELD IN THE DRYER MAKES A BUZZING NOISE.
IF I LET GO OF THE BUTTON THE DRYER STOPS.

I HAVE TOOK THE LID OFF THE DRYER AND I THINK THE BUZZING IS COMING FROM THE TIMER.

I DONT KNOW WETHER TO CHANGE THE TIMER OR THE RELAY (OR IF IT'S ANOTHER PROBLEM).

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM PLEASE AS I DONT WANT TO WASTE MONEY.

My Hoover HNC160-80 had the same problem. Had trouble getting the front panel off but with perseverance managed to get it off. I bought a capacitor from Maplin for £3.29 .22 microfarads 500v although later found out the one on the PCB is 400v, but still managed to fit it and hey presto. Saved myself the cost of a repair callout or new tumble dryer. Very pleased

Great advice - my engineer warned that repair would be uneconomic.
£25 for a relay and, using the trick about fixing the pcb inside the control panel saved time and sweat. Back in business in 20 minutes.

If you have problems getting the wires off the white/white terminal simply bend the spades to allow enough room to remove.

HSV170-80 buzzing would run but not stay on. Lived with it for a few weeks as 15 seconds(ish) from first start the drum reverses direction and it would stay on if held through this part of the cycle. Sourced an RT314024 relay from ebay for £3.20 and that got rid of the buzzing but still did not hold on - found this post and did a Maplins run for a RG24b Capacitor, its £3.19 now! in and working - thanks

Hi I experienced the same buzzing when pressing the start button on our Hoover TC 650 condenser dryer. ( won't run without holding in the button) . I first thought it was the timer motor faulty but after looking at these posts suspect the buzzing of the timer motor ( when you hold in the start button ) is because it isn't getting DC . Mine problem actually maybe the small diode bridge so I will replace that as well. Will post later after it is fixed. ( hopefully )

My on button won't stay in, I haven't got any buzzing though, so do I need to replace the parts mentioned above or is the a simplier solution? I have a HNC180
Thanks

Tried the advice here & the same advice from Maplin.
Fitted new RELAY PCB 91201247 having photographed where all the wires clip in.

Now the dryer has no life at all. (I've tried reattaching the old board but still nothing!)

Any ideas?

With my VHC 180, I found that on the inside of the control face, on the right hand side, there are two existing screw holes that the holes in the new relay board fitted perfectly. I carefully changed the cables over and left the old board in place, thus avoiding taking off the door and making for a much easier job if I need to replace it again. This is likely as the machine is not very old but gets a lot of use.
I don't understand why they didn't put it there to start with.
I got my new relay from eBay. Much cheaper than anywhere else.

This worked a treat on my Hoover VHC 180 condenser dryer. Ordered the relay from eBay for about £8

Take the top of the dryer by removing the 3 screws on the back (also removing the side rails which are left in situ). This allows you access to the 2 screws to remove the upper faceplace (what the buttons are connected to).
Remove the lower cover (where the water is) and undo the 2 screws on each side which holds the main door assembly on. Then open the door and remove 4 screws which hold the door plate in place. There are 6 screws in total but leave the 2 short ones in place.
Then you can remove the door plate and get to the PCB. 2 screws and its off. Swap over the wires and put back together. Simples.

Thanks to everyone. Same problem here, capacitor from Maplin solved the problem. Would never have worked it out without all your replies. Would have got in an engineer and be looking at a fair bill. Far happier spending £2.
Thanks a lot :-)

Hi , I am so glad I come across this site, had exactly the same problem I didnt fancy messing around with the capacitor ( being a mere woman ) so I ordered a START BUTTON RELAY PCB 91201247 from Ebay for £9.85 delivered next day, took me about 20 mins to fit and my dryer is all fixed...bliss.
The answers on here even helped with which screws to undo and about replacing the screws to the relay from the inside, thanks again to everyone that posted, now I need to fix my washer !!

Same fault on mine, again fixed with the capacitor from Maplin. Don't be put off by how much bigger it is that the one it replaces, it fits and it works!

Thanks for the question and for the answers, I just fixed my Hoover tumble dryer (HNC160-80) with the .22 microfarad 500V capacitor from Maplin, cost me £2.48. I think this site is brilliant!

I can add my thanks to everyone here and report success fixing this issue. In case it helps anyone, the capacitor I used was Maplin code RG24B - a 500V 0.22 microfarad metallised polypropylene capacitor.

It's WAY bigger than what's on the board originally, but you can still fit it ok and there's plenty of room.

I too screwed the board back on from the other side - good tip.

I wished I had found this page sooner, our TV630 had the same problem, fitted a new bi-polar switch as I thought the buzzing was coming there, no success. After reading these posts I shoot off to Maplin and brought a .22uf 275 volt capacitor for £1.16 fitted it and problem solved. I also took the advice about refitting with the screws the other way, perfect.

Great advice about taking a photo of the wiring saves a lot of grief if the wires are incorrectly re-attached.

Thanks all for the posts.

Hi all, same problem so went and bought the cap in maplin, replaced old cap and put back together, and the fuse on the main board just kept tripping out, now the dryer is just dead nothing at all. I may have re-attached the wires back to the PCB incorrectly, anyone, help!!!

Thanks for posting folks - my Hoover 6kg load condensor tumbler had the same fault symptoms (had to hold power button in for it to stay on) and we replaced the capacitor today as per 'Santas Helper's' post, with the £2.40 cap from Maplin, and its fixed the fault. :D :D :D
Anyone who has this same fault I would recommend trying this component first.

A couple of tips:
When I replaced the circuit board, I put the screws in from behind (the circuit board side), so that it will be easier to remove if I ever have to get to it again (saves removing the front panel)
Whenever I start taking spade connectors or similar off circuit boards, I take a quick photo with my mobile phone, so that I can be sure to get them back in the right places again, and it saves having to make notes!

Can I just get clarification? My Hoover "Mega Load" Condender Dryer is displaying the exact same problem. I found for a while that banging on the right hand side panel near the top and towards the back, while holding in the button, made it stay on, but this technique has now stopped being effective.

Is it the relay or the capacitor I need to replace, or both?

Thanks.

Jon

Similar problem, similar solution - replace the capacitor - circa £2.30 from Maplin! New cap (.22uF) rated at 500V, and much bigger than old.

It was a puzzle getting to the board (read advice below), plus the old cap looked in perfect condition.

Also replaced the bridge rectifier (23p!), because quick test by helpful Maplin's person, suggested it was half broken. But that did not fix the problem.

My dryer model was HDV7FMUK, Hoover 7KG Mega Load model.

Follow up to earlier post. The actual model was the HNV170 Nextra.
I replaced the relay which I sourced for £5 all in but this was not the problem. The control PCB simply operates the relay to latch on the power i.e. the power switch closes a circuit to operate power to the relay, which has contacts in parrallel with the ON switch, so once the ON button is pressed, it operates the relay and the power is maintained, however, the power for the relay (24VDC) is derived from the bridge rectifier on the board (the little blsck round component), which smooths an AC voltage to DC to operate the relay (in conjunction with the Resistor Capacitor). The problem was the capacitor which is on the PCB to smotth the course DC voltage from the rectifier, hence with the capacitor faulty the voltage to the Relay operating coil was (from distant memory of this sort of thing) was a DC half wave sinusoidal voltage which needed the capacitor to produce a smooth DC voltage, hence the buzzing as the relay was continually operating. Hey presto, chnage the capacitor - the white tube looking device (£2 ish from Maplin) and it's fixed. I'd advise you to take the whole PCB to Maplin and get them to recommend the relacement device. Again, you will need a soldering Iron to replace the component - take care always as you are working with an electrical appliance (always switch the power off and take the plug out from the mains)

Have had exactly the same problem on a Hoover Nextra Tumble Dryer. Thought it was the "ON" Button so swapped the leads over to adjacent "Acrylic/ synthetics" switch and drum rotated but had buzzing sound. I think the on switch is just non latching and so this is not the problem. Pressed button in and out and could actually see arching inside relay on PCB adjacent to Control/ Timer module so I think this is the problem and agree with earlier findings. The part number for the relay is Tyco Electronics RT314024:

Product Highlights:

* RT1 Series
* Contact Arrangement = 1 Form C, SPDT, 1 C/O
* Contact Current Rating = 16 Amps.
* Monostable Coil Magnetic System
* Without Coil Suppression Diode

Will try to find cheapest way to source the component (i.e. without large delivery charge) and advise on outcomes (I could find the relay for a couple of quid but the delivery charge was £15).

btw to replace the relay you will need to be able to solder on a PCB.

The Relay/PCB has sorted the problem out.
You need to remove 3 screws in the back plastic top to slide the top board off to see inside.
You need to remove the screws around the inside of the door and on top of the front panel. Also underneath the panel (remove the lower panel where the water container is first) to get the front off. The PCB board is screwed onto the metal frame from the front.

Thanks Dudikoff but the whole machine works fine whilst the button is held in.
It's not the switch as people have asked as it's a push switch so it doesnt stay in when switched on. It just makes a circuit then retracts.

I have ordered a new relay/pcb from Espares for £17.50 and plan to try that if it ever arrives. Ordered it saturday and got an email on Thursday to say they had posted it and it can take 5 days to arrive. Thats far too slow if you ask me.

Will post the results when i have sorted it...

FYI, Just pulled apart my Hoover 5040/5050 Dryer as it was buzzing too.

Turns out my drive belt had slipped and pretty much shredded itself around the motor and jammed it.

I removed what was left of the old belt, and luckily the motor still seems to work.

Am fitting the new belt tonight - check yours too!
