Yesterday the red battery light stayed on Astra 1.6 1997 while driving home 5miles. There was a slight whining noise from the Alternator (Delco-Remy) when we got back. Now today just tried it and when the engine revs the red light goes brighter - with low revs the red light flashes. I have been told I need to replace the alternator - could anything else be damaged or what do you think? Thanks ...
make sure the belt on the alternator is ok and tensioned correctly.to check the voltage coming out of the alternator put test leads of a multimeter across the battery set to dc voltage with the engine running you should get around 12v,if you rev the engine lightly if alternator is charging ok the meter should read 14v.
