Yes the EGR valve is a common problem, but there is usually then problems with the gearbox like struggling to pull away from rest. Also restarting the car will not stop the light from coming back on pretty soon.

the EGR fault is not a guess,it would do no damage or harm to remove and clean and check it is free,the very fact the fault is not constantly present and is off when you restart the engine is a common vauxhall fault,yes you can put a code reader onto it if you want and would have to go on anyway to clear the fault when repaired but give the EGR a look and see how it goes,good luck

This should set a code or codes in the computer.Don't even try guessing the fault as the other post suggests. Have the codes read and go from there.

try and remove EGR valve to see if it is sticking or seized
