Whats wrong with my megane?

The engine exhaust light has come on in my 10 year old renault megane and the car seems to have lost alot of power. Can anybody tell me whats wrong with it and wether it's okay to drive until I can get it to a garage. I think it could be an electrical fault or the catalytic converter. Help!
