Dell d620 laptop won't power up correctly?

When you turn it on it starts like normal, you get the Dell Screen, it makes the littlestart up sound.... and right about the time your deskto should appear, the whole screen gos black, and stays black. It is not losing power, all the lights are still on, the screen just stays black. Help?
