Mend Yamaha YAS-71 System Work Connect

Yamaha YAS-71 optical and coaxial inputs not working?

I have a Yamaha YAS-71 home theater system and the optical and coaxial inputs do not work at all. I have it connect through the red/white cables (analog). I want to be able to get digital sound but not sure what the problem could be. Any one have any idea. It is connected to a new panasonic viera 32 lcd, so tv is not the problem. Any suggestions?
