If you are talking about the long, black chime rods that the hammers strike then they me be broken. Chime rods are very delicate at the tops, only about 1/8" in diameter so they will brake off if not handled properly. This is why a grandfather clock must be properly packed for moving. If these are the rods you will need to replace them with new ones. The steel chime block that held them will have brass screws in it that once held the rods. You will have to remove them and replace the rods in the block. You can get new rods at Timesavers.com or any other clock parts suppliers.
