i have white gunge on the cap from my car water tank what could this be ?

i have white gunge on the cap from my car water tank what could this be the water tank do not hold water for long

some times the white gunge appears on cars that only do short journeys because they don't get hot enough to clear the condensation out of the engine if it's using water and has white gunge it's probably the head gasket a garage will carry out a sniff test which shows if combustion gases are present in the cooling system
