Mend Murray Going Mower Auto

Whats going on with my Peerless transaxle?

I have a Murray riding lawn mower with a peerless auto. transaxle ( model # 6265-P1). The trans acts as if there is not enough fluid in it to keep it going. Everything starts out ok, but after I make a pass the forward quits working and not long after that the reverse will stop working. It has a new belt, that I've checked the routeing on repeatedly made all the adjustments that I can. Have replaced the stack belt and will be doing the drive belt next.

Is there any way to check the fluid and what weight does it take? I can't seem to find a fill/check plug anywhere.

Is this something that peerless has a lot of problems with?
I don't want to spend the money to have it fixed when I know how to do it myself. I'm just having problems finding info.

rich After reading your coments on the fill plug for adding fluid to the drive, i added the oil and the the 6295 p1 works great. I also added some trans stop leak to the oil and that took care of the leaking around the shift arm. thanks cause I was about to scrap the mower.I also used a wine stopper to plug the fill hole worked fine.

I pulled mine apart, and found that the rivets, that hold the slides on to the pistons in the hydraulic rotor let go.
If you replace them with suitable bolts (I used allen heads, and nylock nuts) it will do the trick.
Make sure you remember where every thing goes, as there are no manuals available.

The forward drive is jerky. Although it feels like the the drive belt is new and tight and the pulleys are fine. There is no grinding noise.

I have the same unit, with the same trouble. I took the 6265-P1 apart & found nothing wrong. It never had any leakage problems in 10 years, so I didn't think it was the fluid. I even bought a used transaxle, and found it had the same problem. I am going to replace the grease and the fluid next. ( I keep thinking of my SUV, and having to change the transaxle fluid every other year)

My Scotts made by Murray, has a Peerless 6265-P1 transaxle - just found the plug for the drive fluid. If you can see the top of the transaxle - viewed from the rear looking toward the front. There are 2 rubber plugs for the fluid holes. One on the right in line with the axle shaft - this one is for oil for the gears - not the fluid drive. On the left under the back half of the pulley is another plug - this one is for the drive fluid. Add oil for the drive here - 10w-30 Synthetic. Now the plugs - they are known as tubbing plugs, rubber and have a home in the middle of them - the hole is to insert a BLUNT shaft in to strech the plug so it can be pulled out. Didn't work for me - used pliers and just pulled - broke them. Anyway filled drive side on the left and no more grunting or slipping. Tapped the hole and made a drain plug of a 3/8 bolt washer and rubber washer. On the right plug - used a plug from my boat live well as it is larger - probably 1/2 inch
Clean the area very well before starting so dirt dosn't get into holes.
