Fitting a shower waste trap?

When fitting a shower trap, is there a tool for tightening the "plug" insert that secures the trap or is it intended only to be hand tightened?

use two screw drives at a angle so they look like a X to tighten waste in.

Hand tighten only. Do not put a Stilson or any similar wrench on it.
