After setting speed and pressing enter------Simply turn off power. VCR goes into timer mode.

You say you cannot use timer record? Maybe all models will not work unless you insert a tape in the machine, set your infomation, then press ENTER, (dont just press exit, otherwise it will just cancel what you have just put in) then press TIMER REC (a button on remote) and light should light up on your VCR. Piece of cake!
